Focus on Crisis Communication - New Insights

10.02.2011 The International Business Communication (IBC) unit at the Aalto University School of Economics organized the third IBC Evening Seminar on 10 February. This time the focus was on crisis communication, which was discussed both from the perspective of research and that of practice.

VIESTI communications panel and networking event attracted large and enthusiastic audience

03.06.2011 VIESTI, the subject club for Aalto ECON communication students (see Facebook Ainejärjestö Viesti – Subject club Viesti), organized a panel discussion and networking event on 11th May in the Arkadia Building of the School. Already beforehand, the event raised a lot of interest and the organizers were happy to receive an audience of some 40 participants.

“Choreography for chaos” - IBC Graduate Nina Korhonen co-wrote a book on business process modelling for corporate communications

03.06.2011 Two years ago, Nina Korhonen graduated from the IBC Program. Her Thesis was an exploration into a new area in corporate communication as she investigated the use of business process thinking in the corporate communication units of Finnish companies.

New Publication: A practice perspective on corporate branding

12.06.2011 Rita Järventie-Thesleff and Johanna Moisander, who are faculty members at Aalto ECON Department of Communication, published an article with with Pikka-Maaria Laine in Scandinavian Journal of Management. New Publication: Conversational use of genres in managerial meetings

28.07.2011 Dr. Pekka Pälli, who works as a senior lecturer at Aalto ECON Department of communication published an article with Esa Lehtinen in Scandinavian Journal of Management. Based on empirical analysis, they argue in their article that genres are used as resources for joint understanding and for conducting particular conversational actions in meetings.

New Publication: Narratives on Chinese colour culture in business contexts

26.08.2011 Kirsi Kommonen, IBC doctoral candidate, has published an article in Cross Cultural Management. Kommonen's article focuses on the ways in which dynamics in negotiating cultural meanings in the globalizing market place in China become visible in one particular aspect of culture: colour culture. New Publication: Professional Communication in a Global Business Context: The Notion of Global Communicative Competence

12.09.2011 Leena Louhiala-Salminen and Anne Kankaanranta, who are faculty members at Aalto ECON Department of communication, published an article in IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication. Communications increasingly involved in corporate strategy work

10.10.2011 A survey study conducted in the Department of Communication on the challenges and competencies of corporate communication professionals indicated that communications continue to be largely involved in the strategy work of organizations.

Seminar on Women on Corporate Boards

11.10.2011 Aalto ECON Department of Communication hosted a seminar on Women on Corporate Boards at the Aalto University School of Economics on October 6, 2011. The seminar was organized by Rita Järventie-Thesleff in collaboration with the association Board Professionals Finland. The aim of the seminar was to provoke discussion and debate on the small numbers of women on corporate boards. The event was the first in the series of seminars and workshops that will be organized by the "Women on Corporate Boards" research group of the department.

Joint seminar on communicating CSR

02.11.2011 On 28 October, Aalto ECON communication students and Finnish communications professionals got together to discuss issues related to responsibility and communication. The event was organized at the Department of Communication by Viestintäekonomit (the association of business graduates who work in communications) and the student society for communication students Viesti.

04.11.2011 Erja Laurila-Hellman, Lecturer in Russian, from the Department of Communication was chosen as the Teacher of the Year 2011 by The Association of Economics Students in Helsinki.

UNESCO Joint Policy Forum on Mainstreaming Open Educational Practices (OEP) forum

23.11.2011 Alona Senishch, who works at the Aalto ECON Department of Communication, participated in UNESCO Joint Policy Forum on Mainstreaming Open Educational Practices (OEP) in the context of higher education, which was held Nov. 14 2011 in Paris. The forum brought together educational professionals, organizational leaders and policy makers from around the world to examine the results of Open Educational Quality Initiative (OPAL) and Content Creation Excellence through Dialogue in Education (CONCEDE) projects that promote innovation and quality in higher education OEPs.

100-year-old School of Economics was celebrated in a dinner organized by Viesti

13.12.2011 Viesti, the communication student society of Aalto ECON, organized a festive dinner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of School of Economics on December 8th 2011. The event, hosted at Proffa staff restaurant, gathered together a happy crowd of communication students, members of the alumni and current faculty members. It was a delightful surprise that so many alumni were present, from the 1950’s to the 2000’s. This surely proves the long history of the Department of Communication.
