VIESTI, the subject club for Aalto ECON communication students (see Facebook Ainejärjestö Viesti – Subject club Viesti), organized a panel discussion and networking event on 11th May in the Arkadia Building of the School. Already beforehand, the event raised a lot of interest and the organizers were happy to receive an audience of some 40 participants. The room was practically packed with students from the two Master’s Programs (International Business Communication and Talouselämän viestintä) and representatives of faculty.
The six members of the panel were communications professionals working in communications consultancies and in organizations using their services: Elisa Ylinen from Conexio, Jari Lähdevuori from Hill & Knowlton, Anne Brax from WWF, Juhani Levola from Deski, Mira Rinne from Miltton, and Maria Silander representing both Sampo Oyj and Viestintäekonomit (the club for business graduates working in communications). Anu Peltonen and Tuomas Hämäläinen from VIESTI facilitated the discussion and inspired the panel into lively exchanges on a variety of themes ranging from the actual daily work of communications professionals to the wider trends in the industry.
Although the perspectives towards the developments in the communications industry slightly varied, the panelists largely seemed to agree that the prospects are promising. The strategic value of corporate communications – whether conducted by the organization itself or together with a consultancy partner – is getting recognized in business and other organizations.
After the panel, Sonja Anttila, the Chair of Viesti, thanked the panelists and the active audience for the highly interesting discussion and invited everyone to enjoy the delicious buffet dinner and coffee & cake.
The evening was closed by a brief discussion of the new Master’s Program that will start in the Department in fall 2013. The new Master’s will combine the main offerings of the two present programs and add new elements and more choice for the future students in communication at Aalto ECON. The plans were introduced by the present Program Directors Leena Louhiala-Salminen and Marja-Liisa Kuronen.
