Doctoral dissertation defended on Jan 20: (Taija Townsend)
13.01.2012 Taija Townsend (MA, University of Helsinki) defended her dissertation Women as Leaders in Public Discourse in the subject area of International Business Communication on Friday, January 20, 2012 at 12.15 pm in the Chydenia Building, Stora Enso Hall (3rd floor), Aalto University School of Economics, Runeberginkatu 22-24.
Collaboration with Aleksanteri Institute: Russian-Western Interaction
10.02.2012 In collaboration with the Aleksanteri Institute, the International Business Communication (IBC) Master’s Program arranged an intensive course on Modern Contexts of Cross-Cultural Communication: Russian- Western Interaction. Professor Mira Bergelson from the Department of Foreign Languages and Regional Studies, Moscow State University, ran the course together with Dr Katja Koikkalainen from the Aleksanteri Institute. The course was partly financed by the Finnish Master’s School in Russian and East European Studies (VIE).
Salla Huttunen awarded in EDAMBA Thesis Competition 2011

IBC Evening Seminar on internal communication attracted record audience
23.02.2012 Together with Aalto ECON Corporate Relations, International Business Communication (IBC) organized the 2012 IBC Evening Seminar “Focus on Internal Communication” on Thursday, 16 February. In our present world of continuous change, the topic seems to be a hot issue as more than 70 people had signed up to listen to the two invited experts, one from the academia and the other from the business world.
At meetings, speech helps to build authority relationships
13.03.2012 Meetings are not just a forum for conveying information, but also a context for constructing authority relationships between participants. The speech of those attending meetings contains tiny linguistic signals that reveal a speaker’s attitude to the subject being discussed and what he or she assumes the others know about it.

Project management tools for multidisciplinary research
13.05.2012 The Department of Communication hosted a successful intensive course on “Project management tools for multi-disciplinary research: Design and article writing processes from conception to publication” for KATAJA (the Finnish doctoral program in business studies) PhD students. The objective of the course was to help doctoral students develop methods for creating and evaluating both research design and contribution potential to key journals with multi-disciplinary perspectives. As teachers, the course featured two internationally acknowledged communication studies scholars, Dr. Constance Kampf from the University of Aarhus and Dr. Kirk St. Amant from East Caroline University.
New Publication: Consumer workers in the converging media markets
07.06.2012 Johanna Moisander, a faculty member of the Department of Communication, has just published an article on consumer work with Saara Könkkölä and Pikka-Maaria Laine. The article was published in International Journal of Consumer Studies and it deals with the strategic and productive roles that consumers play as immaterial labour or consumer workers in the converging media markets.

Professor A. Fuat Firat joins the Department of Communication as Distinguished Visiting Professor
15.08.2012 Professor A. Fuat Firat will join the Department of Communication as Distinguished Visiting Professor, starting September 1 2012. Professor Firat is one of the founding fathers of postmodern and critical marketing and consumer research and he continues to be one of the most cited scholars in the broader field of marketing and consumer research.

New publication: Visual Chitchat
20.11.2012 Mikko Villi, who works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Communication has published an article on visual interpersonal communication in the journal Interactions: Studies in Communication & Culture (2012, volume 3, number 1).
Leading Crisis Communication scholars visiting Aalto BIZ
17.12.2012 Professors Finn Frandsen and Winni Johansen from Aarhus University, Centre for Corporate Communication(http://bcom.au.dk/research/academicareas/ccc/) visited the Department of Communication in November. They are experienced researchers and teachers in corporate communication and world leading scholars in crisis communication, and we were very happy to have them in Helsinki for four weeks!
New publication: Social curation in audience communities
17.12.2012 Postdoctoral researcher Mikko Villi has published an article on the involvement of audience communities in distributing content produced by media companies. The article focuses on how the networked media ecosystem and the tools provided by the legacy media and social media companies enable the effortless sharing of such media content that people find relevant, funny or interesting enough to be worth for others also to read, listen or watch. The article contributes to audience studies by theoretically and empirically elaborating on these practices as social curation. Results from a qualitative study among the personnel of a Finnish newspaper indicate that engaging the audience in social curation is more important than involving the audience in content production with or for the company.
Dr. Rita Järventie-Thesleff Appointed Professor of Practice
19.12.2012 The dean of Aalto University School of Business has appointed Rita Järventie-Thesleff, D.Sc. (Econ.) as Professor of Practice for the period of 1.1.2013-31.12.2015. The professorship is at the Department of Communications.
Record number of graduates from our two Master’s Programs in 2012
19.12.2012 We are very happy to announce a record number of Master’s Graduates from the Department of Communication in 2012! A total of 32 students graduated (16 from International Business Communication, and 16 from Talouselämän viestintä) majoring in communication.
