Metal music researchers around the world gather at Aalto

16.06.2017

The conference covers topics from Russian metal fans’ online communities and Algerian metal scene to mythology manifesting itself in Finnish metal music.

Aalto University School of Business is hosting an international metal music research conference in Helsinki on 28–30 June. Over 30 presentations from nearly twenty different countries are heard in the multidisciplinary Modern Heavy Metal 2017 conference.

This is already the third time MHM conference is organised by Aalto University. The special theme in this year's conference is music and national identities. The event is part of the Centenary of Finland’s Independence programme, and it is organised just before Tuska Open Air Heavy Metal festival (30 June–2 July). Tuska has evolved into the biggest heavy metal festival in Northern Europe and the most important metal music event in Finland. It is now organised already for the 20th time.

The researchers’ presentation topics offer a varied and multicultural cross-section into metal music research. The topics handle, for example, different countries’ and areas’ metal cultures and phenomena, metal and Finnishness, and the music genre’s social and ethical themes. In addition to researchers, musicians and representatives from the music industry are among the guests and the audience. The programme also includes ‘Metal Industry’ panel discussions organised in cooperation with Music Finland.

The discussions continue during the Tuska festival. The festival programme has been built with panel discussions and interviews, in which metal culture is dissected from different viewpoints by, for example, researchers, artists, authors, and athletes.

The creator and responsible organiser is the Academy Research Fellow of the Aalto University School of Business, Docent in Management of music and culture export, Toni-Matti Karjalainen.
