Jozsef Veress asks in his dissertation, if a civil economy can enable fulfilling genuine needs through meaningful work - without jobs?
Can the basic income facilitate to “reallocate” into a new, civil economy the robust creative energies that the digitalization or “fourth industrial revolution” liberate from wage work? “Voluntary cooperation in civil society enables self-organizing meaningful creative work that shares resources and outcomes, fulfils genuine needs, improves life quality, and catalyses growing effectiveness of collective resourcing”, says Veress.
According to his dissertation, the transformational dynamism of civil society provides broader context also for discussions about the basic income in Finland and shortening work time in Sweden. Technical progress and “jobless growth” result in decreasing employment rates by leaving unfulfilled needs which are hard to be monetized or are uncovered by purchasing power. Through meaningful non-wage work generating both social and market value the civil society is able to meet these needs although market logic does not consider them demands worth pursuing.
